How to spend 3 days in Cappadocia

Cappadocia is a stunning region in central Turkey known for its ancient cave dwellings and rock-cut churches that date back to early Christian times. Extraordinary rock formations, known as fairy chimneys, which create a surreal landscape that attracts tourists from all over the world. Hot air balloon rides provide breathtaking panoramic views of these formations at sunrise, making it a must-do experience for many travelers. To explore everything that Cappadocia has to offer I highly recommend to rent a car like we did to be able to explore the region on your own schedule. Given the distances between the valleys and underground cities the car is your best approach.

Here’s a suggested 3-day itinerary to make the most of your time:

Day 1: Explore Göreme

Given that the first day would likely be cut short due to the time of arrival and check in to hotel, car pick up etc I would list some ideas that you can choose from based on your timing. On our first day we were very tired after overnight bus ride from Antalya to Nevsehir. We arrived in the early morning but could not check in to our room until 1pm and after we had lunch we got ready to explore the city around 3pm which is a late start. The receptionist recommended a sunset camel ride tour as relaxing and beautiful experience and that’s all we did on the first day. The tour guide picked us up from the hotel and dropped us off after, we had an early dinner and called it a day because the following day we had to wake up at 4 am to be ready for 4:30 pick up for air balloon activity. But back to the first day:

  • Göreme Open-Air Museum: Start your day at this UNESCO World Heritage site, showcases impressive frescoes and offers insight into the region's historical significance.

  • Sunset Camel ride: Experience the enchanting beauty of Cappadocia with a sunset camel ride that offers a unique perspective of the region's stunning landscapes. Tour guides equipped with knowledge of the local culture and geography will lead you through picturesque paths, allowing you to capture breathtaking views and memorable photographs inspired by the shifting colors of the sky. Embrace this unforgettable adventure and create lasting memories amidst one of the world's most extraordinary landscapes.

Day 2: Hot Air Balloon & Love Valley

  • Hot Air Balloon Ride: Experience the breathtaking views of Cappadocia’s landscape from above at sunrise.

The most exciting day of our trip was the second day where we had a hot air balloon ride planned. Early morning is the ideal time for this adventure, as you can witness the captivating sunrise illuminating the landscape. Dress warm !! We had this experience in September and it was very chilly in the morning. I recommend adding layers, hoodie, maybe a hat because you will be waiting 30 min - 1 hour for the transportation, then balloons to be inflated and that is before sunrise. Later when up in the air it gets much warmer because the flame that produces hot air gets pushed into balloon above and warms you up.

For a hot air balloon pickup, participants will typically be contacted by the balloon company the evening before to confirm details. On the day of the flight, a shuttle will arrive at your accommodation around 4:30/5am. The bus will take you to the office where everyone is given snacks and hot tea while awaiting wind prognosis for the day. Based on that information the decision will be made if weather is suitable for balloon flight or not. If you got lucky with the weather conditions then the next stop is a launch site, where you can enjoy watching the balloons being inflated and ready for take off.

Once airborne, you’ll enjoy a serene flight that provides panoramic views of the valleys, fairy chimneys, and ancient cave dwellings, along with opportunities for breathtaking photography. After the flight, a traditional celebration typically includes a toast and a certificate of completion, marking the end of this memorable experience.

Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak seasons, to ensure you secure a spot on one of the popular flights over this majestic landscape.

After this experience we got dropped off at the hotel around 8-8:30 am. Perfect timing for a breakfast and to pick up a car from the car rental. Also, some rentals can bring the car right to your hotel and upon check out you can just leave it there for a pick up. I found it to be very helpful and saved us time.

  • Love Valley in Cappadocia: a captivating destination known for its unique rock formations and stunning landscapes. The valley is characterized by fairy chimneys—tall, natural pillars of rock that have been shaped by volcanic eruptions and centuries of erosion. These formations create a surreal and picturesque environment, drawing photographers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts alike.

The area is also famous for its breathtaking sunrise and sunset views, making it a popular spot for hot air balloon rides.

Here are some activities you can enjoy in this location:

    1. Hiking

Explore the beautiful trails in Love Valley, where you can walk among the iconic fairy chimneys and take in breathtaking views. The trails vary in difficulty, making it accessible for all levels of hikers.

    2. Hot Air Balloon Rides

Experience Cappadocia from above by taking a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. The breathtaking views of Love Valley and the surrounding areas provide a unique perspective and a memorable experience.

    3. Photography

Love Valley offers incredible opportunities for photography. Capture the unique rock formations, vibrant landscapes, and stunning sunrises or sunsets, making it a perfect spot for both amateur and professional photographers.

    4. Picnicking

Bring a picnic and enjoy a leisurely meal amidst the natural beauty of Love Valley. The serene environment and scenic views create a romantic setting for couples to relax and enjoy each other's company.

    5. Horseback Riding

Explore the valley on horseback for a different view of the stunning scenery. Several local tour operators offer guided horseback riding tours that provide a chance to discover hidden gems of the valley.

For those seeking a thrill, consider an ATV tour through Love Valley. This activity allows you to cover more ground while enjoying the dramatic landscapes and unique rock formations.

    7. Sunset Viewing

    8. Visiting Nearby Villages

Explore nearby villages, such as Göreme or Uçhisar, where you can immerse yourself in local culture, taste traditional Turkish cuisine, and shop for unique handicrafts.

Day 3: Underground Cities and Avanos

  • Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu Underground City is an extraordinary historical site that dates back to ancient times, believed to have been used as a refuge during invasions. The city is carved into soft volcanic rock, allowing for an intricate network of tunnels and chambers.

The tour typically begins with an entrance to one of the many shafts that lead underground, where visitors descend several levels. If you do not have a tour guide included in your ticket I highly recommend to take one, there are guides at the entrance offering their services. The underground city can be a confusing and scary experience without a guide and I do not recommend it to people who feel uncomfortable in windowless confined spaces. Derinkuyu reaches depths of over 250 feet and could accommodate thousands of people, alongside livestock and supplies. The layout includes living quarters, kitchens, storage rooms, and churches, showcasing a sophisticated design tailored for communal living.

Guided tours provide insights into the city's construction, historical significance, and the innovative ventilation systems that kept the air fresh. Highlights often include the massive stone doors that could seal off sections and the unique wine-making facilities. The tour concludes with a sense of awe at the ingenuity of ancient civilizations and their ability to create such an extensive subterranean refuge.

Depending on the pace this should take 1-2 hours. There are an open air market outside the site where merchants sell rugs, bags, lamps, clothes, etc that we found to be very entertaining. There are also places to eat and recharge after the tour.

Depending on the time of your departure from Goreme this activity might be enough or if time allows you can stop by the Avanos.

  • Avanos: Visit this town known for its pottery. You can take a pottery workshop or simply explore the charming streets along the Kızılırmak River. If hungry there are places to enjoy a meal by the river.
