Things to do on a layover in Zurich

Zurich, Switzerland

If you have a layover in Zurich and you have a few hours to spare, there are several things you can see and do to make the most of your time in the city. Zurich is a vibrant and culturally rich city with plenty to offer, even on a short visit. Make sure to check the duration of your layover and allow ample time to return to the airport, especially if you need to clear customs and security. Zurich's efficient public transportation system makes it relatively easy to get to the city (about 15 minutes train ride to the city). I had 23 hours layover and was able to see Bahnhofstrasse, Lindenhof, Grossmünster Church, Zurich Old Town (Altstadt) and Limmat River. That took me about 4 hours of chill walking while taking pictures. After that I stopped at Le Dezaley for cheese fondue with a glass of white house wine. At that point i called it a day and went to the hotel i rebooked for my stay close to airport (Radisson hotel Zurich airport ).

Here are some recommendations for what to see and do during a layover in Zurich:

  • Zurich Old Town (Altstadt): Take a stroll through the charming Old Town of Zurich. You can explore narrow streets, visit historic buildings, and soak in the city's medieval atmosphere. Don't miss the Grossmünster and Fraumünster churches, both of which are iconic landmarks.

  • The Limmat River is a prominent waterway that flows through Zurich, Switzerland. It effectively divides the city of Zurich into two parts: the eastern and western sides. The eastern side is home to Zurich's Old Town (Altstadt), while the western side features more modern and commercial areas. In the summer months, the Limmat River becomes a popular spot for locals and tourists to cool off. There are designated areas where you can safely swim in the river, providing a unique experience. I would recommend to prebook a boat tour along the Limmat River and Lake Zürich if time allows as this is a very popular touristic activity and tickets sell fast! All ferry tours were sold out when I landed in Zurich and I unfortunately missed out in this activity…

  • Grossmünster Church, located in the heart of Zurich's Old Town (Altstadt). It was built in Roman style and has tall twin towers, which serve as one of the major landmarks of the city. The church also features beautiful stained-glass windows designed by Augusto Giacometti.

  • Lindenhof Hill: Lindenhofplatz is a nice quiet park that offers panoramic views of Zurich and the Old Town. It's a great spot for a leisurely walk or a picnic.

  • Bahnhofstrasse: This world-famous shopping street is just a short walk from Zurich's main train station. Even if you don't plan on shopping, it's worth taking a stroll to admire the luxury boutiques and the lively atmosphere.

  • Swiss National Museum: Located near the train station, the Swiss National Museum offers insights into Switzerland's cultural history. If you're interested in Swiss heritage and artifacts, this is a convenient place to explore.

  • Swiss Chocolate and Swiss Watches: Switzerland is known for its high-quality chocolates and watches. Consider picking up some Swiss chocolate or window shopping for Swiss watches during your layover.

  • Local Cuisine: Try some Swiss cuisine at a local restaurant. Swiss specialties like fondue, raclette, and rösti are must-tries. I was recommended Swiss Chuchi by hotel i was staying in Radisson hotel Zurich airport ) but it was fully booked ( tip: pre-book in advance) so I went to another great place Le Dezaley, also highly recommended. Loved it.

  • Lake Zurich: If your layover allows, you can take a short walk to Lake Zurich (Zürichsee). The lake is a beautiful spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. You can also take a boat ride for a different perspective of the city.

Make sure to check the duration of your layover and allow enough time to return to the airport, especially if you need to clear customs and security. And have fun! With enough planning and research you are on the roll to take the most of the layover in Zurich!
